How to Become a Radiology Technician

Radiology technicians operate high tech sophisticated equipments in hospitals and clinics. These include X-ray, Mammography, Computerized Axial Tomography (CAT) and Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scan devices. Their main objective is to produce clear and detailed images of the inside of the human body.

This enables the physicians to diagnose and treat several medical conditions that would otherwise be difficult to document. While ensuring they get high quality and accurate images, these technicians also have to ensure that their interpersonal skills are up to the mark. They have to assuage the anxieties of patients who have several doubts running in their mind regarding their condition.

These technicians are the ones play a pivotal role in diagnosing and eventually help treating any condition a patient has. Without the radiologists the physicians are literally crippled as it is only thanks to them that they can diagnose and treat illnesses or injuries with great accuracy.

One of the highlights of this job is that not only does it pay well (an average radiology technician makes $54,340 per year); it is very challenging and interesting.

These technicians have a unique opportunity to work with some of the most exciting and ground breaking medical machinery available in the whole world.

radiology educational requirements

Education:

The first step towards becoming a radiology technician is to meet the proper educational requirements. Firstly, a high school diploma with special focus in Anatomy, Biology, Chemistry, Maths and Physics is a must.

Once you graduate from high school, you can either opt for a certificate program, an associate degree or a bachelor’s degree in Radiology.
A certificate program typically lasts for 21-24 months and it’s perfect for individuals who already have previous experience in radiology technology. However, this also requires accreditation from regulating bodies. One needs to choose a community or vocational school that is accredited. This is mandatory or else you might find it difficult to land a job in most medical settings.  There are several online courses also available if you intend to pursue your studies and work at the same time.

The most common path to become a radiology technician is getting an associate’s degree from an accredited community college or a private (for-profit) institution. This is preferred as it gives the students an edge in terms of comprehensive education as well as laboratory exposure.

The last option, a four-year bachelor’s degree is another good way for you to learn all the subjects in-depth.
However, whichever option you pursue, your core subjects would include Radiation Physics, Anatomy, Pathology and Radio Biology.

Training:
While you are pursuing your course, you will have to undergo training by the side. This  includes a hands on approach on how to operate x-ray equipment, organize, process and analyze medical images, acquire and calculate accurate mathematical measurements and of course quality control.

Also, to be eligible for national certification, all the candidates mustdemonstrate proficiency in a number of clinical procedures within three years of earning an associate’s degree.
Specialization:

Once the basic training is done, the students can up their skill by specializing in a certain area. These include Mammography, Computer tomography (CT), Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Cellular imaging, Medical Sonography, Medical imaging and Radiography.

Final Certification and Licensing:
The most important certification when it comes to radiological technician is the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists certification exam. One should also keep in mind that to maintain the certification, 24 hours of continuing education every two years is mandatory.

As far as the licensing is concerned, it differs from region to region. The health board of your state would give you information on what you need to do to become a radiology technician in your state.

Honey Bees and Pollinator Conservation

Humans have had a relationship with the honey bee for thousands of years.  The impact is so deep that they have influenced our religious and cultural history.  Honey bees have been providing honey, medicine, wax and pollen.  They have pollinated our food and medicinal crops as well as help to provide us with the basic materials, like wood, plant oils, fibers, gums, etc, which are needed for many industrial applications.  Despite the honey bees’ impact and importance to our survival, only a very small percentage of the population has ever been directly concerned or thought about the well being of these tiny creatures that have had such a huge influence in our lives. All that changed in 2006 with the advent of “Colony Collapse Disorder”.  It became a concern of everyday people when the story of disappearing colonies of bees made front page news around the world.

The idea that we need to do more to help honey bees finally went beyond the confines of hobbyists and professional beekeepers into the general public. People started wondering what would happen if we lost our honey bees and what they could do to help them. Even though this famous quote is not really from Albert Einstein as it has been claimed, it does make us think:

“If the bee disappears from the surface of the earth, man would have no more than four years to live.”

Notice that the quote says bee, not honeybees, an important distinction.  The consequences of the loss of pollinators would still be very real and threaten all life on the planet. Today we know that the honeybee is not our only pollinator…there is a huge diversity of native bees and pollinators who are all in as much trouble as the honeybee.

What are some things you enjoy most in life?

Do you like to wake up to a morning glass of orange juice, a cup of coffee, milk and fruit with your cereal, or blueberry pancakes with maple syrup? In the afternoon, do you like to snack on a crisp apple, juicy peach or a sweet pear? Do you like your evening salad with cucumbers, tomatoes, fresh herbs, almonds or walnuts, avacodo and cheese? (Cheese and all other dairy products require millions of tons of alfalfa annually, which require pollination to get the alfalfa seed.)

Do you have a favorite flavor of ice-cream? Do you have a favorite chocolate bar? Do you love to eat a bowl of cherries, red raspberries or a summer favorite like a peach.  How about a peanut butter and jelly sandwich? A fresh baked pizza with tangy tomato sause, fresh peppers, garlic, seasoned with basil, oregano, and fennel.

Pollinators make all these foods, and more possible.

What about the things you like to do?

Do you like working in the garden, taking a hike in woods, camping, bird watching, biking a nature trail, climbing the bluffs along a river, visiting a prairie, hunting, fishing, visiting State and National Parks?    Pollinators are essential in creating these habitats.

“These creatures are the underpinning of our existence on this planet.”

The work of the pollinators is vital to our survival in ways we don’t see or think about. The basic fact of life is that we are all dependant on the relationship between plants and pollinators. Plants make the oxygen we breathe, provide us with the food we need, with medicine, shelter and the raw materials that create most of our jobs.

“These smallest of creatures, that run the world, go unnoticed and unprotected.”

(source: Association for pollination ecologist). Pollinators are not only important to the continued existence of the food that we eat, but also to the availability of all the diversity of food plants.

For most of North American pollinator species, there are no population data and there is little knowledge of their ecology. (2) These tiny little creatures pollinate more than 150 crops for human consumption, including fruits, berries, vegatables, nuts, and seeds that make up one third of the food we eat.  They also pollinate many of the forage crops needed by livestock.

We must recognize and respect the work that pollinators provide towards our survival and that of the rest of the planet. It has been largely ignored up until now. It has been a free invisible service that sustains many industries, our economy, our wild places and 90% of the flowering plants on the Earth. The price we need to pay as knowledgeable and enlightened individuals is to promote and invest in this deep ecology.  Afterall, we need it much more than it needs us.

Certified Nurses Aide Training

Before you can begin working as a nurse’s aide you need to get certified nurse’s aide training. This course gives you the formal authorization to work as a nurse’s aide. The duration of the program varies from institute to institute but mostly it takes around two years of time before you can before you can become a CNA certified nurse assistant. This program gives you both the knowledge and the training that you need in order to perform your job as a nurse assistant. You need to know about all the basics regarding patient care, dressing and feeding them along with other tasks like transporting them and mobilizing them. You will be required to fill patient’s forms and maintain a record and keep in communication with the head nurse in charge.

The quality of the program varies from state to state. Michigan has some of the finest CNA training schools in the country along with those in Texas as well. The more the school scores in ranking the better you will learn and will be in a better position to take the final exam. Therefore if you compromise in this stage you will only have to suffer later when you fail the test and have to take it again thus adding up to the overall cost of the course. Basically there are two portions that you have to pass. First there is a written test that involves theoretical knowledge and then there’s a clinical test that involves hands – on practical demonstrations of the abilities you learnt. The best schools have great laboratories for their students where they learn in real life scenarios thus becoming more confident and able to pass the final exam without any trouble.

There are certain requirements that you have to fill before you can enroll in the certified nurse’s aide training program. These requirements vary from state to state and college to college. Some only require that you have a high school degree while others require at least a GED certificate. Others may just require you to pass their test and give you admission based on that. The cost of your certified nurse’s aide training program will also vary from one school to another. The higher the ranking your school enjoys the more costly it will be.

These days there are many universities that are also offering their certified nurse’s aide training program online via virtual classes that allow you to attend them whatever time you like simply sitting home. These are best if you already have a current job that you cannot quit until you actually pass the exam and get the job of a nurse assistant. If you don’t have enough cash to enroll in a university than you can sign up for one of the free courses that are available. These courses basically require you to work for a specified period of time at their facility after you have gained your certificate.
