medical assistant job descriptionBecoming a medical office assistant is often a good first step when looking into the healthcare industry. If you are unsure of what you want to do, and you would like to simply get an overview of the profession, an office assistant is a really good choice. With a low requirement for education, a growing job market, and the wide application at all sorts of healthcare offices, it really lets you get your foot in the door.

The education that is required is absolutely minimal when compared to other jobs in the healthcare field. While a high school education used to be the most common prerequisite, many jobs ask for either an associates degree or a certification as a medical office assistant, or as commonly referred to as a medical assistant or MA. Becoming a doctor or nurse requires much more years of schooling and are much more specialized. The education for becoming an MA mainly focuses around office functions, insurance work, basic lessons in anatomy, and possibly lessons to administer shots and take vital signs. The workload is generally much less, and the skills that are learned can often be transferred to any other office scenario.

The growing job market makes finding a job to be a medical office assistant a particularly easy process. The field is growing at an astonishing rate, and the fact that every medical office or hospital needs many MA’s makes it extremely flexible in terms of the location. Regardless of if you want to stay put where you are, or move to a completely new location, there is generally always a doctors office looking for a new medical assistant. This also can give you the ability to try different places and move on if you don’t like the people that you work with. Not many jobs give you those types of options.

Another great part about becoming an MA is that they are needed in literally every type of healthcare field. Whether you want to be working in a podiatrists office, an emergency room, or just general practitioner, you can apply your skills that you learn at any of them. It can also be a great way to make great contacts in the industry, and learn exactly what it entails to be a doctor or a nurse.

While this certainly sounds like a great option to test out the healthcare waters, you may want to really think about it before you take the leap. If you are in an area where all offices require that you have either an associates or MA certification, then you are looking at one to two year commitment to training. If you then work as an MA for one or two years, you are now three to four years older without having started the training to become a doctor or nurse if that is what you choose. The best route might be to first check if you can find an office that only requires a high school degree, that way you will be able to get the best experience out of being a medical office assistant without investing too much time.

Accredited Distance Learning Degree – Things You Should Know

posted by: admin

As you may know, an accredited distance learning degree program offers a certain amount of flexibility that a traditional college degree program does not offer. The ability to get higher education at home and at one’s own pace is a very appealing prospect for many potential students.

However, before you embark on any distance learning degree, I would urge you to take a look at these two articles; What What Is A Master’s Degree Worth? and Is College Worth It?

These two articles pose interesting view points on whether you should be taking the financial plunge to earn yourself a degree.

Here are my 2 cents on things you should consider prior to doing an online degree :

1. Make sure you verify the accreditation of the online university you intend on enrolling with. One great place to do that is the CHEA. There are many diploma mills out offering worthless degrees – so better to check things out.

It is also better to do an online degree program that has professional accreditation (in addition to having school accreditation).

For example, if you want to do a bachelors degree in public administration, it is better to choose a program that is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Public Affairs and Administration. What some online degree students miss is that schools can be accredited as well as specific degree programs. Better to have both types of accreditation.

2. Why do you want to do an accredited distance learning degree? Such a simple question and yet I wonder how many students ask themselves this question.

If your answer is simply – to increase career earnings I would wonder if spending money on a college degree is actually the best way to go about this.

For the thousands you going to be spending on tuition (student loans), books and incidental fees, you could actually get a better return on investment (ROI) if you started an internet business.

Bill Gates was in Harvard and he dropped out to start his own business. I don’t think he has any regrets about doing that.

To start an online business, you don’t need to invest thousands or hire workers either. In many cases, just your time and the knowledge you already have is all that is needed. A moderately successful online business can earn you $2000-5000 monthly.

If you want to explore this option, find more details here on a surefire way to start your online business successfully.

Of course, if you are planning on doing a professional degree, such as law or medicine or perhaps do a MBA, then the economics changes. Even though the cost of doing these degrees are relatively high, your earning potential is also high.

3. This leads me to the subject of degree choice. It goes without saying that some accredited distance learning degrees are bigger money makers than others. A person who has a MBA degree in finance and accounting is more often than not, going to be paid fairly higher than a person with masters in history.

However, if you already have a bachelors degree in a particular field, does it always make sense to do a masters in that field also? According to Liz Pulliam Weston, that is not always the case. She points to a case where the Present Value (PV) Income of doing a masters degrees in Liberal Arts is just $5 more than the PV of having a bachelors degree in Liberal Arts.

However, that said, career earning potential is not the only reason why people do accredited distance learning degrees. Some students genuinely have a passion for a particular field and are willing to take on student loans to pursue that passion.

If you are such a person, then do you best to pay your student loans on time. The horror stories of students with 6 figure debts are scary.

If your field is not a high paying one, consider what you can do to augment your income and reduce your financial burden. Can you write a book for your field? Can you lecture? Can you do consultancies? Doing these thing will help you to establish yourself as a leader in your field and at the same time, help you to stay afloat in these tough economic times.

How To Become A Tutor

Teaching at a university or college is a very rewarding career path; however, sacrifice and hard work are needed if you really want to follow and pursue this path. Don’t worry; your hard work and sacrifices will be rewarded with more than a handful of benefits. So, here are the steps on how to become a tutor.

How To Become A Tutor

Step 1: Get the Proper Education

Make sure you have completed your compulsory education. In the U.S., the compulsory education consists of 12thgrade, high school diploma of its General equivalency Diploma. Enroll at a 2-year or 4-year university or college. If you decide to go to a community college, junior college, or to any 2-year school, make sure that the degree you take is intended for transfer to a 4-year university or college(as per howdb.org). Some degrees at a 2-year institution are not qualified for transfer, but to prepare the student for his chosen job market immediately.

Step 2: Choose a major

This does not necessarily have to be the discipline or subject you choose to teach in the future; however, this should be something you are really interested in. Complete your Bachelor’s degree with a particular major and degree program. Try to get really good grades. 3.5 or even higher GPA is necessary to really be ready for action for the next step on becoming a professor.

Step 3: Enroll in a Continuing Education Program

Go to a graduate school and get a post-graduate degree. This is really the time where you have to choose your specialization. When you choose a graduate school for your post-graduate study, study the program carefully. Make sure it has high enrollment because for sure, these programs have a good reputation for a certain reason.

Step 4: Assess Your Goals and Interest

Decide if you want to venture into a more teaching-oriented or research-oriented career. If you want to pursue teaching in a 2-year college, you need to have a master’s degree or even a Ph.D. in the discipline that you want to teach. If teaching in a university is more preferable for you, then a terminal or doctorate degree in that discipline is a must.

Step 5: Decide if you want to work full-time or part-time

Most universities and colleges allow their professors to work full-time and to earn tenure. This provides the professors with some benefits such as termination protection without a cause or due process.

Step 6: Earn your Tenure

While earning tenure is a great benefit, you have to keep in mind that it comes with a big responsibility. He an honest and a good scholar but do not ever abuse it not hide behind it. In engineering and science, assistant professors are usually given funds for building a lab, buying specialized supplies and equipment, and getting their projects started. This is normally considered as an investment so make sure you do well on this.

There you go – the simple steps on how to become a tutor. Just remember one thing – remain humble and never ever succumb to the “professor’s disease”. Just because you are in front of students who technically have fewer experiences than you don’t mean that you are already have an exalted place in this universe.

Does Surgical Tech Training Prepare for Unexpected Situation

After Surgical Tech Training: Are You Really Prepared?

Your surgical tech training has most likely prepared you for a number of situations. You may be prepared for the sight of blood when you enter the operating room. You know what your surgeonexpects of you while you are assisting in an operation and you have a full understanding of the surgical instruments and equipment. However, your surgical tech training might not have prepared you for everything you need to know.

What happens when the unexpected occurs?

Tough Ethical Situations You May Face after Surgical Tech Training

When it comes to being ready for anything that might happen on the job, did your surgical tech training prepare you to deal with tough ethical situations? Not every situation you may come across is easy to resolve and simple to understand. Knowing what your moral and legal obligations are is extremely important if you are going to maintain the proper level of health care for your patients.

Let’s consider the following situations and how they might be difficult for you to deal with for the surgical tech.

Reporting a Surgeon- The surgeon you work under will most likely be a well-trained individual that you look up to in your profession. While you may expect these individuals to be perfect, they may often fall short of your expectations. Here are a few reasons why you might consider reporting a surgeon.

  • Something went wrong during surgery, which could affect the life and recovery of the patient
  • You suspect addiction to alcohol or drugs
  • Surgeon bullied you, another surgical tech or your co-workers

Before you report a surgeon to a hospital board or upper management, always attempt to speak to the surgeon if at all possible. While it may be scary to address a surgeon or upper management about legal or ethic problems, and you may be scared that you will be fired, your main concern should be patient care.

Patient Care- The most important part of your job is taking care of your patients. If you feel they have been harmed or been incorrectly cared for, you are obligated to report this. While this may seem like a straight forward statement, the reality is your relationship with your co-workers may be on the line.

Even though you may damage friendships with co-workers and possibly cause the termination of those individuals, you must also consider your patient’s needs first. As a surgical tech, your duty is to the patient first.

Dealing with Upper Management- Although upper management should be considered that safe haven for individuals needing help with ethical problems, this is not always the case. When upper management tries to discredit your problem and bury under a large legal pile, you may be forced to go the extra mile for your patients. Legal representation is not always the best option, but if no other solution is available, it may be the best way you can protect your patient.

There are many ethic issues you may have to face after surgical tech training. Make sure the surgical tech training program you enter into provides you with a course on ethic problems and surgery. This will help you be prepared for the issues you may face and help you protect your patients from these ethical issues.

How to Become a Radiology Technician

posted by: admin

Radiology technicians operate high tech sophisticated equipments in hospitals and clinics. These include X-ray, Mammography, Computerized Axial Tomography (CAT) and Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scan devices. Their main objective is to produce clear and detailed images of the inside of the human body.

This enables the physicians to diagnose and treat several medical conditions that would otherwise be difficult to document. While ensuring they get high quality and accurate images, these technicians also have to ensure that their interpersonal skills are up to the mark. They have to assuage the anxieties of patients who have several doubts running in their mind regarding their condition.

These technicians are the ones play a pivotal role in diagnosing and eventually help treating any condition a patient has. Without the radiologists the physicians are literally crippled as it is only thanks to them that they can diagnose and treat illnesses or injuries with great accuracy.

One of the highlights of this job is that not only does it pay well (an average radiology technician makes $54,340 per year); it is very challenging and interesting.

These technicians have a unique opportunity to work with some of the most exciting and ground breaking medical machinery available in the whole world.

radiology educational requirements

Education:

The first step towards becoming a radiology technician is to meet the proper educational requirements. Firstly, a high school diploma with special focus in Anatomy, Biology, Chemistry, Maths and Physics is a must.

Once you graduate from high school, you can either opt for a certificate program, an associate degree or a bachelor’s degree in Radiology.
A certificate program typically lasts for 21-24 months and it’s perfect for individuals who already have previous experience in radiology technology. However, this also requires accreditation from regulating bodies. One needs to choose a community or vocational school that is accredited. This is mandatory or else you might find it difficult to land a job in most medical settings.  There are several online courses also available if you intend to pursue your studies and work at the same time.

The most common path to become a radiology technician is getting an associate’s degree from an accredited community college or a private (for-profit) institution. This is preferred as it gives the students an edge in terms of comprehensive education as well as laboratory exposure.

The last option, a four-year bachelor’s degree is another good way for you to learn all the subjects in-depth.
However, whichever option you pursue, your core subjects would include Radiation Physics, Anatomy, Pathology and Radio Biology.

Training:
While you are pursuing your course, you will have to undergo training by the side. This  includes a hands on approach on how to operate x-ray equipment, organize, process and analyze medical images, acquire and calculate accurate mathematical measurements and of course quality control.

Also, to be eligible for national certification, all the candidates mustdemonstrate proficiency in a number of clinical procedures within three years of earning an associate’s degree.
Specialization:

Once the basic training is done, the students can up their skill by specializing in a certain area. These include Mammography, Computer tomography (CT), Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Cellular imaging, Medical Sonography, Medical imaging and Radiography.

Final Certification and Licensing:
The most important certification when it comes to radiological technician is the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists certification exam. One should also keep in mind that to maintain the certification, 24 hours of continuing education every two years is mandatory.

As far as the licensing is concerned, it differs from region to region. The health board of your state would give you information on what you need to do to become a radiology technician in your state.

Honey Bees and Pollinator Conservation

posted by: admin

Humans have had a relationship with the honey bee for thousands of years.  The impact is so deep that they have influenced our religious and cultural history.  Honey bees have been providing honey, medicine, wax and pollen.  They have pollinated our food and medicinal crops as well as help to provide us with the basic materials, like wood, plant oils, fibers, gums, etc, which are needed for many industrial applications.  Despite the honey bees’ impact and importance to our survival, only a very small percentage of the population has ever been directly concerned or thought about the well being of these tiny creatures that have had such a huge influence in our lives. All that changed in 2006 with the advent of “Colony Collapse Disorder”.  It became a concern of everyday people when the story of disappearing colonies of bees made front page news around the world.

The idea that we need to do more to help honey bees finally went beyond the confines of hobbyists and professional beekeepers into the general public. People started wondering what would happen if we lost our honey bees and what they could do to help them. Even though this famous quote is not really from Albert Einstein as it has been claimed, it does make us think:

“If the bee disappears from the surface of the earth, man would have no more than four years to live.”

Notice that the quote says bee, not honeybees, an important distinction.  The consequences of the loss of pollinators would still be very real and threaten all life on the planet. Today we know that the honeybee is not our only pollinator…there is a huge diversity of native bees and pollinators who are all in as much trouble as the honeybee.

Do you like to wake up to a morning glass of orange juice, a cup of coffee, milk and fruit with your cereal, or blueberry pancakes with maple syrup? In the afternoon, do you like to snack on a crisp apple, juicy peach or a sweet pear? Do you like your evening salad with cucumbers, tomatoes, fresh herbs, almonds or walnuts, avacodo and cheese? (Cheese and all other dairy products require millions of tons of alfalfa annually, which require pollination to get the alfalfa seed.)

Do you have a favorite flavor of ice-cream? Do you have a favorite chocolate bar? Do you love to eat a bowl of cherries, red raspberries or a summer favorite like a peach.  How about a peanut butter and jelly sandwich? A fresh baked pizza with tangy tomato sause, fresh peppers, garlic, seasoned with basil, oregano, and fennel.

Pollinators make all these foods, and more possible.

fruit-stand-1-med

What about the things you like to do?

Do you like working in the garden, taking a hike in woods, camping, bird watching, biking a nature trail, climbing the bluffs along a river, visiting a prairie, hunting, fishing, visiting State and National Parks?    Pollinators are essential in creating these habitats.

“These creatures are the underpinning of our existence on this planet.”

The work of the pollinators is vital to our survival in ways we don’t see or think about. The basic fact of life is that we are all dependant on the relationship between plants and pollinators. Plants make the oxygen we breathe, provide us with the food we need, with medicine, shelter and the raw materials that create most of our jobs.

“These smallest of creatures, that run the world, go unnoticed and unprotected.”

(source: Association for pollination ecologist). Pollinators are not only important to the continued existence of the food that we eat, but also to the availability of all the diversity of food plants.

For most of North American pollinator species, there are no population data and there is little knowledge of their ecology. (2) These tiny little creatures pollinate more than 150 crops for human consumption, including fruits, berries, vegatables, nuts, and seeds that make up one third of the food we eat.  They also pollinate many of the forage crops needed by livestock.

We must recognize and respect the work that pollinators provide towards our survival and that of the rest of the planet. It has been largely ignored up until now. It has been a free invisible service that sustains many industries, our economy, our wild places and 90% of the flowering plants on the Earth. The price we need to pay as knowledgeable and enlightened individuals is to promote and invest in this deep ecology.  Afterall, we need it much more than it needs us.

Certified Nurses Aide Training

Before you can begin working as a nurse’s aide you need to get certified nurse’s aide training. This course gives you the formal authorization to work as a nurse’s aide. The duration of the program varies from institute to institute but mostly it takes around two years of time before you can before you can become a CNA (certified nurse assistant). This program gives you both the knowledge and the training that you need in order to perform your job as a nurse assistant. You need to know about all the basics regarding patient care, dressing and feeding them along with other tasks like transporting them and mobilizing them. You will be required to fill patient’s forms and maintain a record and keep in communication with the head nurse in charge.

Certified nursing Assistant Training GuideThe quality of the program varies from state to state. Michigan has some of the finest CNA training schools in the country along with those in Texas as well. The more the school scores in ranking the better you will learn and will be in a better position to take the final exam. Therefore if you compromise in this stage you will only have to suffer later when you fail the test and have to take it again thus adding up to the overall cost of the course. Basically there are two portions that you have to pass. First there is a written test that involves theoretical knowledge and then there’s a clinical test that involves hands – on practical demonstrations of the abilities you learnt. The best schools have great laboratories for their students where they learn in real life scenarios thus becoming more confident and able to pass the final exam without any trouble.

There are certain requirements that you have to fill before you can enroll in the certified nurse’s aide training program. These requirements vary from state to state and college to college. Some only require that you have a high school degree while others require at least a GED certificate. Others may just require you to pass their test and give you admission based on that. The cost of your certified nurse’s aide training program will also vary from one school to another. The higher the ranking your school enjoys the more costly it will be.

These days there are many universities that are also offering their certified nurse’s aide training program online via virtual classes that allow you to attend them whatever time you like simply sitting home. These are best if you already have a current job that you cannot quit until you actually pass the exam and get the job of a nurse assistant. If you don’t have enough cash to enroll in a university than you can sign up for one of the free courses that are available. These courses basically require you to work for a specified period of time at their facility after you have gained your certificate.
